Yamaha Albar was one of the rare and exclusive Swiss car manufacturers, founded by Alois Barmettler (from whom the acronym Al-Bar is derived) and based in Buochs, in the Canton of Nidwalden. During the boom in recreational off-road vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s, Albar distinguished itself in the kit car and custom vehicle sector by transforming the VW Beetle.
In Switzerland, road-legal certification for special and modified vehicles has historically been among the strictest in Europe. Successfully obtaining official approval and registration for its buggy kits from Swiss vehicle licensing authorities gave Albar a reputation for exceptional build quality and safety.
