Model history and curiosity
The Alfa Romeo 4C is a sports coupé produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo from 2013 to 2021.
It was presented as a world premiere online, shortly before the international premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013, and the subsequent Italian debut at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in April of the same year. Although it is an Alfa Romeo branded car, production is carried out by Maserati (another automobile manufacturer of Fiat S.p.A.) at its plant in Modena.
As a high-performance car, the Alfa Romeo 4C can be considered a modern reinterpretation of some of the Milanese manufacturer's historic sports cars. Structurally, the engineers took inspiration from the 1966 Scarabeo concept car (made by OSI on a Giulia base), while in terms of style, there are similarities with the 2007 8C Competizione – from which, however, the 4C differs in almost all its aspects, both conceptual and mechanical.
The 4C acronym refers to the number of cylinders of the engine mounted centrally on the car, and is at the same time a reference to the sports cars produced by the Milanese brand in the 1930s and 1940s; in fact, the 8C and 6C acronyms distinguished a series of models, for competition and road, equipped with eight- and six-cylinder engines respectively.
The style and design of the car is the work of a team supervised by Marco Tencone, head of the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, together with Lorenzo Ramaciotti, general coordinator of the style of the brands of the Fiat-Chrysler group.
The 4C for the North American market
The 4C prepared for the North American market; the main difference compared to the European version concerns the front headlights, which abandon the particular plastic structure for a more conventional transparent fairing.
In 2014, Alfa Romeo returned to the North American market, after nineteen years of absence, precisely with the 4C (the last Arese car sold in North America had been, in 1995, the 164 with a 3-liter V6 petrol engine). The version prepared for the overseas roads, aesthetically, differs in some aspects compared to the European one. The front headlights are now faired, they lose the internal structure in composite material with independent LED lights (defined as "spider" by the Americans) to adopt a more traditional lighting system, like the 4C Spider, therefore equipped with a transparent cap. Slight changes are also reserved for the rear bumper, which sees the insertion of two rounded elements in the license plate holder area as well as a new extractor. The car was presented to the American public during the New York Auto Show in April 2014.
THE NORTH AMERICAN VERSION
The North American version follows the same distribution strategy as in Europe, with the first 500 units distributed with special equipment and at a higher price, with all the standard features and aesthetic elements available in carbon fiber; subsequent units will instead have the list price. At the time of the American presentation, some features are declared: the rear wheels are larger than the front ones, while the weight of the American version is 1050 kg, 155 more than the European one: the weight increases as a result of the aluminum reinforcements added to the carbon fiber structure, to meet the more stringent NHTSA regulations. The American version reaches 258 km/h and goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour (98 km/h) in about 4 seconds. The engine is the same 1750 TBi combined with the Alfa TCT sequential gearbox, it delivers 241 HP of maximum power and 350 N·m of maximum torque.
