The Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 Quadrifoglio Verde represented the pinnacle of Alfa Romeo's compact sportiness between the late 1980s and the first half of the 1990s. Characterized by its unmistakable four-cylinder boxer engine, it was a lightweight, loud, and responsive car, capable of offering an analog and visceral driving sensation.
Engine: 1.7-liter, 8-valve boxer, fed by two twin-choke Weber or Dell'Orto carburetors.
Power: 118 hp at 5,800 rpm.
Performance: 0-100 km/h in approximately 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 196 km/h.
Character: Deep, metallic sound at low revs, immediate throttle response, and blistering thrust. Its low weight (approximately 980 kg) made it incredibly agile.
The Quadrifoglio Verde trim significantly differed from the standard versions with a distinctly sporty look:
Exterior: Special aerodynamic kit with body-colored or sporty bumpers, side skirts, integrated rear spoiler on the tailgate, red stripes along the body, and Quadrifoglio Verde emblems on the sides.
Interior: Sporty bucket seats (often Recaro or with a dedicated checked/striped fabric), three-spoke leather sports steering wheel, and a full instrument cluster with a tachometer and red accents.
The boxer engine has a very low center of gravity and an unmistakable sound, and its low weight ensured rapid cornering and reduced body roll.
Interesting fact: although the State Police and Carabinieri Gazelles predominantly used 1.3 and 1.5 engines, the 33's structure was so well-proven that several 1.7 units were used for fast highway pursuits and official duties in the 1990s.
