Model history and curiosity

The 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 is a true piece of Italian automotive history. We're talking about the legendary "Duetto" (although at the time the official name was simply Spider) in its second-series configuration, known among enthusiasts as the "Coda Tronca" (Short Tail).
Introduced in 1969 to update Pininfarina's original design (the "Cuttlefish Bone"), the second series features a sharply chopped rear end. By 1976, this design had reached its peak.
Aesthetics: The sharply chopped rear end was not only an aesthetic choice to modernize the line, but also improved aerodynamics and trunk space.
Period Details: In 1976, the Spider 1600 (often referred to as the Junior) had a slightly sleeker look than its bigger brother, the 2000. For example, it didn't have the characteristic plastic "whiskers" or the headlight covers (which were instead uncovered), maintaining a more classic and clean line.
The Interior: Essential yet sporty interior. The three-spoke steering wheel (often wood or faux wood) and the two large circular instruments (speedometer and tachometer) oriented toward the driver created a perfect '70s racing atmosphere.
Under the hood beats one of the most famous engines in automotive history: the 1570 cm³ Alfa Romeo Bialbero.
The Engine: An aluminum inline-four with double overhead camshafts and fed by two twin-choke carburetors (usually Weber or Dell'Orto).
Power: It delivered approximately 102 hp (DIN) at 5,500 rpm.
Drive and Transmission: Rear-wheel drive is strictly available, paired with a precise, sporty 5-speed manual transmission.
Braking and Suspension: Four-disc brakes come standard (a treat for the time) and a responsive suspension, capable of delivering classic power oversteer when provoked, yet always incredibly communicative.
Today, the 1976 Spider 1600 is a highly sought-after classic car, ideal for those who want to enter the world of Alfa Romeo collecting; compared to the 1300 version, it has that extra edge that makes it highly enjoyable even in modern traffic and on motorway journeys, while compared to the 2000, it is often considered "purer" and less demanding.
