Description
FIAT 509 A Torpedo 3 doors
1929
4 cylinders, 990 cc, 22 HP, 3 gears, 78 Km/h
“A” stands for Aggiornata, second version of the previous Cinquecento Nove!
Among the various improvements, the redesigned cylinder head, a new lubrication system
and a new carburetor are worth mentioning.
Produced in just 4 years, from 1925 to 1929 in 92,514 units, it replaces the 501, precedes the 514.
The small car is offered in monthly installments thanks to financing from the newly formed SAVA.
The first deliveries to customers start in the autumn of 1925.
It was the first Italian car to win the Monte Carlo Rally in 1928 driven by the French gentleman-driver Jacques Bignan.
The 509 is the car that made Gabriele d'Annunzio say "The Automobile is Female".
This example chassis 246118, registered 05/28/1929 with the current first license plate MI30475, left the factory in the standard 4-door Torpedo version. Subsequently, over the years, it was transformed into a Commercial vehicle with an opening in the rear to facilitate the loading of bulky goods.
Once the period of "hard work" was over, the new owner wanted to convert it into a rare "beauty" by modifying the mudguards, the footboards, the windshield (which opens in one piece), the hood, the new spoked rims while the spare one was recessed and covered in the transom. The new body was equipped with three access doors (only one on the right to facilitate the access and exit of the rear passengers). The typical and original exposed radiator with angular chrome frame has been covered by a heart-shaped fairing to soften the rounded shapes. The headlights are fitted with a protective chrome mesh. Many small details of value were applied to this new transformation such as the locks on the front bonnet opening handles.
