Model history and curiosity
The Kawasaki 500 H1, also commercially called Kawasaki 500 Mach III, is a motorcycle model produced by the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries Motorcycle & Engine, in eight successive series, from 1969 to 1977.
The power and torque values and the performance declared by the manufacturer, truly remarkable for the time, contrast visually with the slenderness of the telehydraulic fork and the small diameter of the brakes.
The engine, of rather simple conception, is instead particularly robust, equipped with a composite primary shaft, rotating on 6 main bearings and designed to withstand the excessive driving torque.
The only structural weakness of the engine is represented by a tendency for the central piston to seize, after prolonged use in non-optimal ventilation conditions.
These characteristics meant that it was nicknamed "Flying Coffin", however, the "H1" achieved enormous sales success both in the United States and in Europe, which demonstrated the validity of the strategy devised by commercial experts. In Italy, 300 units were imported, starting from the spring of 1969, initially put on sale at a price of 870,000 lire, then increased to 990,000 lire, during the summer.
The 2nd series "H1A" of 1970, condensed all the small improvements made to the model during the production of the first 20,000 units, limiting the changes to the new tank without recesses for the knees and to different colors and graphics of the bodywork, and was put on sale at 880,000 lire.
