Model history and curiosity

The 1954 Fiat 1100/103 is part of the very first "103" series, introduced in 1953 to replace the historic 1100 E ("Musone").
The nickname "Bauletto" was given by enthusiasts to distinguish this first generation, characterized by its short tail with a separate but integrated luggage compartment in the shape of a protruding false trunk.
It is one of the most emblematic cars of the Italian economic boom: solid, modern for its time, and highly versatile.
It was a turning point for Fiat, which abandoned the old chassis with separate headlights for a unitized body structure with integrated fenders (three-box body).
In 1954, the 1100/103 still retained the front doors hinged to the B-pillar (book-style opening/suicide doors), an unmistakable aesthetic and period detail.
In addition to the standard sedans (the more affordable Tipo A and the accessorized Tipo B), the Familiare (known as the Giardinetta) and the sporty TV (Turismo Veloce) version with a central fog light integrated into the grille debuted in March 1954.
Engine: 4-cylinder in-line engine (1,089 cc), overhead valves;
Power: ~36 hp at 4,400 rpm;
Transmission: 4-speed manual with steering column shift;
Drive: Rear-wheel drive;
Top speed: approximately 116 km/h;
Suspension: Independent front, rigid axle with leaf springs at the rear;
Brakes: Drum brakes on all 4 wheels.
The rear trunk was not just a stylistic choice, but a practical solution for housing the spare tire, which was stored flat on the floor, leaving room for luggage. Already with subsequent restylings (from the 103 E series of 1956 onwards), the tail was redesigned, making it more streamlined and eliminating the sharp overhang of the trunk.
Today, the 1953-1954 "trunk" versions are among the most sought-after by collectors for their vintage charm and participation in historical re-enactments such as the Mille Miglia.
