Model history and curiosity
Despite its excellent rideability and lighter weight compared to the older "pre-unit" 350cc models (such as the BSA B31), the B40 faced a commercial restriction: in the UK, the maximum engine capacity for beginners was set at 250cc. Those who passed the driving test therefore tended to move directly to the more powerful 500cc or 650cc models. Production of the civilian B40 ended in 1966, but its robustness prompted the British Army to order thousands of them in military configuration (B40WD) until 1970.
